One of the first decisions in any embedded product is the microcontroller. ESP32 and STM32 are two of the most popular choices we see, and each shines in different situations.
When ESP32 makes sense
- You need integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE
- Fast time-to-market for connected devices matters most
- Your product is cloud-connected and OTA updates are essential
When STM32 makes sense
- Deterministic real-time control (motors, power conversion)
- Rich analog peripherals, timers and CAN interfaces
- Very low power budgets and broad package choices
- Long-term availability for industrial products
Why not both?
Many of our designs pair an STM32 for real-time control with an ESP32 as a connectivity co-processor. The split keeps safety-critical control isolated from networking code.
The right answer depends on your power budget, peripherals, certification path and supply chain. Our concept & architecture phase exists precisely to make this call with evidence rather than habit.
